First Reading

Romans 3:21-30

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

21But now without the law the righteousness of God is made clear, being witnessed by the law and the prophets.

22Even the righteousness of God, by faith of Jesus Christ, to all and upon all them that believe in him: for there is no distinction:

23For all have sinned, and do need the glory of God.

24Being justified freely by his grace, through the rescue, that is in Christ Jesus,

25Whom God has proposed to be a propitiation, through faith in his blood, to the shewing of his righteousness, for the remission of former sins,

26Through the forbearance of God, for the shewing of his righteousness in this time; that he himself may be righteous, and the justifier of him, who is of the faith of Jesus Christ.

27Where is then your boasting? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? No, but by the law of faith.

28For we account a man to be justified by faith, without the works of the law.

29Is he the God of the Jews only? Is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also.

30For it is one God, that justifieth circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

Psalm

Psalm 130:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6ab

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

3The evil have wrought upon my back: they have lengthened their sin.

4The Lord who is righteous will cut the necks of sinners:

Gospel

Luke 11:47-54

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

47Sorrow to you who build the monuments of the prophets: and your fathers killed them.

48Truly you bear witness that you consent to the doings of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs.

49For this cause also the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles; and some of them they will kill and persecute.

50That the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation,

51From the blood of Abel to the blood of Zacharias, who was killed between the alter and the temple: Yea I say to you, It shall be required of this generation.

52Sorrow to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge: you yourselves have not entered in, and those that were entering in, you have hindered.

53And as he was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the lawyers began violently to urge him, and to oppress his mouth about many things,

54Lying in wait for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him.
