First Reading

Romans 1:16-25

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

16For I am not ashamed of the gospel. For it is the power of God to salvation to every one that believes, to the Jew first, and to the Greek.

17For the righteousness of God is revealed in it, from faith to faith, as it is written: The righteous man liveth by faith.

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and injustice of those men that detain the truth of God in injustice:

19Because that which is known of God is clear in them. For God has shown it to them.

20For the invisible things of him, from the creation of the world, are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made; his eternal power also, and divinity: so that they are inexcusable.

21Because that, when they knew God, they have not glorified him as God, or given thanks; but became vain in their thoughts, and their foolish heart was darkened.

22For professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.

23And they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into the likeness of the image of a corruptible man, and of birds, and of fourfooted beasts, and of creeping things.

24Therefore God gave them up to the desires of their heart, to uncleanness, to dishonour their own bodies among themselves.

25Who changed the truth of God into a lie; and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

Psalm

Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

2The heavens show forth the glory of God, and the firmament declareth the work of his hands.

3Day to day uttereth speech, and night to night shows knowledge.

4There are no speeches nor languages, where their voices are not heard.

5Their sound has gone forth into all the earth: and their words to the ends of the world.

Gospel

Luke 11:37-41

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

37And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee prayed him, that he would dine with him. And he going in, sat down to eat.

38And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner.

39And the Lord said to him: Now you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but your inside is full of rapine and sin.

40You fools, did not he that made that which is without, make also that which is within?

41But yet that which remaineth, give charity; and look, all things are clean to you.
