First Reading

Romans 4:1-8

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

1What shall we say then that Abraham has found, who is our father according to the flesh.

2For if Abraham were justified by works, he has of which to glory, but not before God.

3For what says the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him to righteousness.

4Now to him that works, the reward is not reckoned according to grace, but according to debt.

5But to him that works not, yet believes in him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reputed to righteousness, according to the purpose of the grace of God.

6As David also termeth the blessedness of a man, to whom God reputeth righteousness without works:

7Blessed are those whose sins are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

8Blessed is the man to whom the Lord has not imputed sin.

Psalm

Psalm 32:1b-2, 5, 11

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

5I have acknowledged my sin to you, and my injustice I have not concealed. I said I will confess against myself my injustice to the Lord: and you have forgiven the evil of my sin.

11Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, you righteous, and glory, all you right of heart.

Gospel

Luke 12:1-7

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

1And when great crowds stood about him, so that they trod one upon another, he began to say to his disciples: Beware you of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

2For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed: nor hidden, that shall not be known.

3For whatever things you have said in darkness, shall be published in the light: and that which you have said in the ear in the chambers, shall be preached on the housetops.

4And I say to you, my friends: Be not afraid of them who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

5But I will show you whom you shall fear: fear you him, who after he has killed, has power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you, fear him.

6Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?

7Yea, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: you are of more value than many sparrows.
