Reading mode

Plain mode helps modern readers follow the text more easily.

On-site scripture text: Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition. Plain mode is a built-in reading aid that modernizes older wording for easier understanding while keeping the same Roman Catholic reading references for the day.

1

First Reading

Sirach 15:15-20

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

Full on-site text is not available for this reference yet, so use the reference above and the official link below.

2

Psalm

Psalm 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

Second Reading

1 Corinthians 2:6-10

How to read it

This reading often teaches Christians how to live with steadiness, charity, and faith. Look for one clear encouragement or warning you can carry into the day.

6Howbeit we speak wisdom among the perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, neither of the leaders of this world that come to nought;

7But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, a wisdom which is hidden, which God ordained before the world, to our glory$1

8Which none of the leaders of this world knew; for if they had known it, they would never have crucified the Lord of glory.

9But, as it is written: That eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has it entered into the heart of man, what things God has prepared for them that love him.

10But to us God has revealed them, by this Spirit. For the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

Gospel

Matthew 5:17-37

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

17Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.

18For amen I say to you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.

19He therefore that shall break one of these least commands, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But the one who will do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20For I tell you, that unless your righteousness abound more than that of the teachers of the law and Pharisees, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21You have heard that it was said to them of old: You shall not kill. And whoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment.

22But I say to you, that whoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whoever shall say, You Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

23If therefore you offer your gift at the altar, and there you remember that your brother has any thing against you;

24Leave there your offering before the altar, and go first to be reconciled to your brother: and then coming you shall offer your gift.

25Be at agreement with your adversary betimes, whilst you art in the way with him: lest perhaps the adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.

26Amen I say to you, you shall not go out from from there till you repay the last farthing.

27You have heard that it was said to them of old: You shall not commit adultery.

28But I say to you, that whoever shall look on a woman to lust after her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

29And if your right eye scandalize you, pluck it out and cast it from you. For it is expedient for you that one of your members should perish, rather than that your whole body be cast into hell.

30And if your right hand scandalize you, cut it off, and cast it from you: for it is expedient for you that one of your members should perish, rather than that your whole body be cast into hell.

31And it has been said, Whoseoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a bill of divorce.

32But I say to you, that whoever shall put away his wife, excepting for the cause of fornication, makes her to commit adultery: and the one who will marry her that is put away, committeth adultery.

33Again you have heard that it was said to them of old, You shall not forswear yourself: but you shall perform your oaths to the Lord.

34But I say to you not to swear at all, neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God:

35Nor by the earth, for it is his footstool: nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king:

36Neither shall you swear by your head, because you canst not make one hair white or black.

37But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.
