1

First Reading

Isaiah 48:17-19

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

17Thus says the Lord your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord your God that teach you profitable things, that govern you in the way that you walkest.

18OH that you had hearkened to my commands: your peace had been as a river, and your righteousness as the waves of the sea,

19And your offspring had been as the sand, and the offspring of your bowels like the gravel thereof: his name should not have perished, nor have been destroyed from before my face.

2

Psalm

Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4 and 6

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

1Blessed is the man who has not walked in the guidance of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the chair of pestilence.

2But his will is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he shall meditate day and night.

3And he shall be like a tree which is planted near the running waters, which shall bring forth its fruit, in due season. And his leaf shall not fall off: and all whoever he shall do shall prosper.

3

Gospel

Matthew 11:16-19

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

16But to which shall I esteem this generation to be like? It is like to children sitting in the market place.

17Who crying to their companions say: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have lamented, and you have not mourned.

18For John came neither eating nor drinking; and they say: He has a devil.

19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say: Look a man that is a glutton and a wine drinker, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. And wisdom is justified by her children.
