First Reading

Proverbs 30:5-9

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

5Every word of God is fire tried: he is a buckler to them that hope in him.

6Add not any thing to his words, lest you be reproved, and found a liar:

7Two things I have asked of you, deny them not to me before I die.

8Remove far from me emptiness, and lying words. Give me neither beggary, nor riches: give me only the necessaries of life:

9Lest perhaps being satisfied, I should be tempted to deny, and say: Who is the Lord? or being compelled by poverty, I should steal, and forswear the name of my God.

Psalm

Psalm 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

29Remove from me the way of sin: and out of your law have mercy on me.

72The law of your mouth is good to me, above thousands of gold and silver. JOD

89Forever, OH Lord, your word stands firm in heaven.

101I have restrained my feet from every evil way: that I may keep your words.

104By your commands I have had understanding: therefore have I hated every way of sin. NUN

163I have hated and abhorred sin; but I have loved your law.

Gospel

Luke 9:1-6

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

1Then calling together the twelve apostles, he gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases.

2And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.

3And he said to them: Take nothing for your journey; neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats.

4And whatever house you shall enter into, abide there, and depart not from from there.

5And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off even the dust of your feet, for a teaching against them.

6And going out, they went about through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
