First Reading

1 Corinthians 3:1-9

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

1And I, brothers and sisters, could not speak to you as to spiritual, but as to carnal. As to little ones in Christ.

2I gave you milk to drink, not food; for you were not able as yet. But neither indeed are you now able; for you are yet carnal.

3For, whereas there is among you envying and contention, are you not carnal, and walk according to man$1

4For while one says, I indeed am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollo; are you not men$1 What then is Apollo, and what is Paul?

5The ministers of him whom you have believed; and to every one as the Lord has given.

6I have planted, Apollo watered, but God gave the increase.

7Therefore, neither he that planteth is any thing, nor he that watereth; but God that gives the increase.

8Now he that planteth, and he that watereth, ate one. And every man shall receive his own reward, according to his own work.

9For we are God's coadjutors: you are God's husbandry; you are God's building.

Psalm

Psalm 33:12-13, 14-15, 20-21

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

12Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord: the people whom he has chosen for his gift.

13The Lord has looked from heaven: he has saw all the people.

14From his habitation which he has prepared, he has looked upon all that dwell on the earth.

15He who has made the hearts of every one of them: who understandeth all their works.

20Our soul waiteth for the Lord: for he is our helper and protector.

21For in him our heart shall rejoice: and in his holy name we have trusted.

Gospel

Luke 4:38-44

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

38And Jesus rising up out of the synagogue, went into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever, and they besought him for her.

39And standing over her, he commanded the fever, and it left her. And immediately rising, she ministered to them.

40And when the sun was down, all those who had any sick with divers diseases, brought them to him. But he laying his hands on every one of them, healed them.

41And devils went out from many, crying out and saying: You art the Son of God. And rebuking them he suffered them not to speak, for they knew that he was Christ.

42And when it was day, going out he went into a desert place, and the crowds sought him, and came to him: and they stayed him that he should not depart from them.

43To whom he said: To other cities also I must preach the kingdom of God: for therefore am I sent.

44And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
