Reading mode

First Reading

2 Thessalonians 2:1-3a, 14-17

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

14Therefore, brothers and sisters, stand fast; and hold the teachings which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle.

15Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God and our Father, who hathloved us, and has given us eternal consolation, and good hope in grace,

16Exhort your hearts, and confirm you in every good work and word.

Psalm

Psalm 96:10, 11-12, 13

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

10Say you among the Gentiles, the Lord has reigned. For he has corrected the world, which shall not be moved: he will judge the people with righteousness.

11Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad, let the sea be moved, and the fulness thereof:

12the fields and all things that are in them shall be joyful. Then shall all the trees of the woods rejoice

13before the face of the Lord, because he comes: because he comes to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.

Gospel

Matthew 23:23-26

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

23Sorrow to you teachers of the law and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and have left the weightier things of the law; judgment, and mercy, and faith. These things you ought to have done, and not to leave those undone.

24Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel.

25Sorrow to you teachers of the law and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within you are full of rapine and uncleanness.

26You blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside may become clean.
