First Reading

Isaiah 26:7-9, 12, 16-19

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

7The way of the righteous is right, the path of the righteous is right to walk in.

8And in the way of your judgments, OH Lord, we have patiently waited for you: your name, and your remembrance are the desire of the soul.

9My soul has desired you in the night: yea, and with my spirit within me in the morning early I will watch to you. When you shall do your judgments on the earth, the inhabitants of the world shall learn righteousness.

12Lord, you will give us peace: for you have wrought all our works for us.

16Lord, they have sought after you in distress, in the trouble of murmuring your instruction was with them.

17As a woman with child, when she draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and cries out in her pangs: so are we become in your presence, OH Lord.

18We have conceived, and been as it were in work, and have brought forth wind: we have not wrought salvation on the earth, therefore the inhabitants of the earth have not fallen.

19Your dead men shall live, my killed shall rise again: awake, and give praise, you that dwell in the dust: for your dew is the dew of the light: and the land of the giants you shall pull down into ruin.

Psalm

Psalm 102:13-14ab and 15, 16-18, 19-21

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

16And the Gentiles shall fear your name, OH Lord, and all the kings of the earth your glory.

17For the Lord has built up Sion: and he shall be seen in his glory.

18He has had regard to the prayer of the humble: and he has not despised their petition.

19Let these things be written to another generation: and the people that shall be created shall praise the Lord:

20Because he has looked forth from his high sanctuary: from heaven the Lord has looked upon the earth.

21That he might hear the groans of them that are in fetters: that he might release the children of the killed:

Gospel

Matthew 11:28-30

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

28Come to me, all you that work, and are burdened, and I will refresh you.

29Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am gentle, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls.

30For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.
