First Reading

2 Kings 2:1, 6-14

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

1And it happened, when the Lord would take up Elias into heaven by a whirlwind, that Elias and Eliseus were going from Galgal.

6And Elias said to him: Stay here, because the Lord has sent me as far as the Jordan. And he said: As the Lord liveth, and as your soul liveth, I will not leave you; and they two went on together,

7And fifty men of the sons of the prophets followed them, and stood in sight at a distance: but they two stood by the Jordan.

8And Elias took his mantle and folded it together, and struck the waters, and they were divided here and there, and they both passed over on dry ground.

9And when they were gone over, Elias said to Eliseus: Ask what you will have me to do for you, before I be taken away from you. And Eliseus said: I beg you that in me may be your double spirit.

10And he answered: You have asked a hard thing: nevertheless if you see me when I am taken from you, you shall have what you have asked: but if you see me not, you shall not have it.

11And as they went on, walking and talking together, look a fiery chariot, and fiery horses parted them both asunder: and Elias went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

12And Eliseus saw him, and cried: My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the driver thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces.

13And he took up the mantle of Elias, that fell from him: and going back, he stood upon the bank of the Jordan,

14And he struck the waters with the mantle of Elias, that had fallen from him, and they were not divided. And he said: Where is now the God of Elias? And he struck the waters, and they were divided, here and there, and Eliseus passed over.

Psalm

Psalm 31:20, 21, 24

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

20OH how great is the crowd of your sweetness, OH Lord, which you have hidden for them that fear you! Which you have wrought for them that hope in you, before the people.

21You shall hide them in the secret of your face, from the disturbance of men. You shall protect them in your tabernacle from the contradiction of tongues.

24OH love the Lord, all you his saints: for the Lord will require truth, and will repay them abundantly that act proudly.

Gospel

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-18

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

1Take heed that you do not your righteousness before men, to be seen by them: otherwise you shall not have a reward of your Father who is in heaven.

2Therefore when you do an almsdeed, sound not a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be honoured by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

3But when you do charity, let not your left hand know what your right hand does.

4That your charity may be in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

5And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, that love to stand and pray in the synagogues and corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men: Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

6But you when you shall pray, enter into your chamber, and having shut the door, pray to your Father in secret: and your Father who sees in secret will repay you.

16And when you fast, be not as the hypocrites, sad. For they disfigure their faces, that they may appear to men to fast. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward.

17But you, when you fastest anoint your head, and wash your face;

18That you appear not to men to fast, but to your Father who is in secret: and your Father who sees in secret, will repay you.
