First Reading

1 Kings 17:1-6

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

1And Elias the Thesbite of the inhabitants of Galaad said to Achab: As the Lord liveth the God of Israel, in whose sight I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to the words of my mouth.

2And the word of the Lord came to him, saying:

3Get you from here, and go towards the east and hide yourself by the torrent of Carith, which is over against the Jordan,

4And there you shall drink of the torrent: and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.

5So he went, and did according to the word of the Lord: and going, he dwelt by the torrent Carith, which is over against the Jordan.

6And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening, and he drank of tile torrent.

Psalm

Psalm 121:1bc-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

3What shall be given to you, or what shall be added to you, to a deceitful tongue.

4The sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals that lay waste.

5Sorrow is me, that my sojourning is prolonged! I have dwelt with the inhabitants of cedar:

6my soul has been long a traveler.

7With them that hate peace I was peaceable: when I spoke to them they fought against me without cause.

Gospel

Matthew 5:1-12

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

1And seeing the crowds, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set down, his disciples came to him.

2And opening his mouth, he taught them, saying:

3Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4Blessed are the gentle: for they shall have the land.

5Blessed are those that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

6Blessed are those that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall have their fill.

7Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

8Blessed are the clean of heart: for they shall see God.

9Blesses are the peacemakers: for they shall be called children of God.

10Blessed are those that suffer persecution for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11Blessed are you when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake:

12Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. For so they persecuted the prophets that were before you.
