First Reading

2 Samuel 6:12b-15, 17-19

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

17And they brought the ark of the Lord, and set it in its place in the midst of the tabernacle, which David had pitched for it: and David offered holocausts, and peace offerings before the Lord.

18And when he had made an end of offering holocausts and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts.

19And he distributed to all the crowd of Israel both men and women, to every one, a cake of bread, and a piece of roasted beef, and fine flour fried with oil: and all the people departed every one to his house.

Psalm

Psalm 24:7, 8, 9, 10

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

7Lift up your gates, OH you leaders, and be you lifted up, OH eternal gates: and the King of Glory shall enter in.

8Who is this King of Glory? the Lord who is strong and mighty: the Lord mighty in battle.

9Lift up your gates, OH you leaders, and be you lifted up, OH eternal gates: and the King of Glory shall enter in.

10Who is this King of Glory? the Lord of hosts, he is the King of Glory.

Gospel

Mark 3:31-35

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

31And his mother and his bretheren came; and standing without, sent to him, calling him.

32And the crowd sat about him; and they say to him: Look your mother and your brothers and sisters without seek for you.

33And answering them, he said: Who is my mother and my brothers and sisters?

34And looking round about on them who sat about him, he says: Look my mother and my brothers and sisters.

35For whoever shall do the will of God, he is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
