First Reading

Ephesians 2:19-22

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

19Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners; but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and the domestics of God,

20Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone:

21In whom all the building, being framed together, groweth up into an holy temple in the Lord.

22In whom you also are built together into an habitation of God in the Spirit.

2

Psalm

Psalm 19:2-3, 4-5

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

2The heavens show forth the glory of God, and the firmament declareth the work of his hands.

3Day to day uttereth speech, and night to night shows knowledge.

4There are no speeches nor languages, where their voices are not heard.

5Their sound has gone forth into all the earth: and their words to the ends of the world.

Gospel

Luke 6:12-16

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

12And it happened in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and he passed the whole night in the prayer of God.

13And when day was come, he called to him his disciples; and he chose twelve of them (whom also he named apostles):

14Simon, whom he surnamed Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

15Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, and Simon who is called Zelotes,

16And Jude, the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who was the traitor.
