First Reading

1 Timothy 3:14-16

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

14These things I write to you, hoping that I shall come to you shortly.

15But if I tarry long, that you may know how you oughtest to behave yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16And evidently great is the mystery of godliness, which was shown in the flesh, was justified in the spirit, appeared to angels, has been preached to the Gentiles, is believed in the world, is taken up in glory.

Psalm

Psalm 111:1-2, 3-4, 5-6

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

1I will praise you, OH Lord, with all my heart; in the council of the righteous: and in the congregation.

2Great are the works of the Lord: sought out according to all his wills

3His work is praise and magnificence: and his righteousness continueth forever and ever.

4He has made a remembrance of his wonderful works, being a merciful and gracious Lord:

5he has given food to them that fear him. He will be mindful forever of his covenant:

6he will show forth to his people the power of his works.

Gospel

Luke 7:31-35

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

31And the Lord said: To which then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?

32They are like to children sitting in the marketplace, and speaking one to another, and saying: We have piped to you, and you have not danced: we have mourned, and you have not wept.

33For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and you say: He has a devil.

34The Son of Man is come eating and drinking: and you say: Look a man that is a glutton and a drinker of wine, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.

35And wisdom is justified by all her children.
