First Reading

1 Timothy 1:1-2, 12-14

How to approach it

Read this as the first big movement of the day. Notice what God is doing, who is speaking, and what part of the story or teaching should stay with you.

1Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the command of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus our hope:

2To Timothy, his beloved son in faith. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

12I give thanks who has strengthened me, even to Christ Jesus our Lord, for that he has counted me faithful, putting me in the ministry;

13Who before was a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and contumelious. But I obtained the mercy of God, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

14Now the grace of our Lord has abounded exceedingly with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus.

Psalm

Psalm 16:1b-2a and 5, 7-8, 11

How to pray it

The psalm is meant to be prayed, not rushed. If the wording feels older, focus on the main movement of the prayer: trust, praise, sorrow, gratitude, or hope.

7I will bless the Lord, who has given me understanding: moreover my reins also have corrected me even till night.

8I set the Lord always in my sight: for he is at my right hand, that I be not moved.

11You have made known to me the ways of life, you shall fill me with joy with your face: at your right hand are delights even to the end.

Gospel

Luke 6:39-42

What to watch for

The Gospel is the center of the reading set. Pay close attention to what Jesus says, what Jesus does, and what response he is asking for.

39And he spoke also to them a similitude: Can the blind lead the blind? do they not both fall into the ditch?

40The disciple is not above his master: but every one shall be perfect, if he be as his master.

41And why seest you the mote in your brother's eye: but the beam that is in your own eye you considerest not?

42Or how canst you say to your brother: Brother, let me pull the mote out of your eye, when you yourself seest not the beam in your own eye? Hypocrite, cast first the beam out of your own eye; and then shall you see clearly to take out the mote from your brother's eye.
