Conmemoración de san Samuel, profeta, quien llamado por Dios, siendo aún niño, fue después juez en Israel y, por mandato divino, ungió a Saúl como rey de su pueblo, pero rechazado éste por su falta de fidelidad, confirió también la unción real a David, de cuya descendencia había de nacer Cristo.
