Memoria de san Ireneo, obispo, que, como escribe san Jerónimo, de niño fue discípulo de san Policarpo de Esmirna y conservó con fidelidad el recuerdo de los tiempos apostólicos. Ordenado presbítero en Lyon, fue el sucesor del obispo san Potino y, según cuenta la tradición, murió coronado por un glorioso martirio. Trató de muchas maneras acerca de la tradición apostólica y escribió egregios libros para defender la fe católica contra los herejes de aquel tiempo (c. 200).
