San Dámaso I, papa de origen hispano, que en los difíciles tiempos en que vivió, reunió muchos sínodos para defender la fe de Nicea contra cismas y herejías, procuró que san Jerónimo tradujera al latín los libros sagrados y veneró piadosamente los sepulcros de los mártires, adornándolos con inscripciones.
