En el monasterio de Wearmouth, en Northumbria (hoy Inglaterra), san Benito Biscop, abad, que peregrinó cinco veces a Roma, de donde trajo muchos maestros y libros para que los monjes reunidos en la clausura del monasterio bajo la Regla de san Benito progresaran en la ciencia del amor de Cristo, en bien de la Iglesia (c. 690).
